3D MANUFACTURING, FINISHING AND HEAT TREATMENTS

March 18, 2021 via GoToMeeting

The first edition of the technical day in webinar organized by the France North Belgium section was a good success since we registered 33 participants from all over France and Belgium. This edition gave the floor to 6 speakers who presented the advances in "3D manufacturing, finishing and heat treatments" on both metallic and ceramic materials. The problem of finishing parts manufactured by 3D printing was discussed from the angle of surface roughness and ways to reduce it. Nicolas Nutal, from the CRM of Liège, presented us different mechanical, chemical or electrochemical treatments, specifying their respective abilities to treat micro-roughness and/or waviness. A panel of the solutions currently available on the market was discussed. Then, Jean-François Van Humbeeck, from the same CRM, gave an example of electrochemical polishing treatment by describing the different steps to go from the laboratory stage to the industrial dimensioning for a part with a complex geometry, while highlighting the usefulness of the realization of a digital twin of the process. Dominique Ghiglione, from CETIM, illustrated the challenges of material control in the pressure equipment sector, for which codes and standards have been developed with the boiler making industry in mind. Nicolas LeGay, from 4D pioneers, spoke about the issue of productivity and warmly invited us to visit his platform for multi-material manufacturing. The morning ended with two presentations on the shaping of ceramic materials. Fabrice Petit, from the Belgian Research Center for Ceramics, first discussed the different forming technologies, highlighting the interest of combining additive and subtractive manufacturing. Finally, Anthony Thuault, from the Polytechnic University of Hauts de France, illustrated some parameters influencing the suitability for microwave-assisted sintering of ceramics such as alumina or zirconia, shaped by stereolithography.

The exchanges between the different participants were interesting even if the conviviality was less marked than in person.

The France-North Belgium section thanks the national office of the A3TS for allowing access to the "Go to meeting" platform for this first edition.
