TOOLING: MATERIALS, HEAT TREATMENTS AND INNOVATIVE COATINGS
The East-Alsace section organized its autumn technical day in Besançon on the theme of tooling, a very important activity in the region. The 55 participants, including 16 students of the 2nd year of the BTS in materials treatment from the SAINT-LOUIS high school, were presented with all the aspects: tool steels, heat treatments and coatings.
After a presentation of the HAUCK Heat Treatment site in Besançon by Roger Gauthier, director of HAUCK France, Hervé GALLIEN, its technical director, presented the typical treatments carried out on tool steels on their site.
After a quick reminder of the different families of tool steels, Christophe GROSJEAN from CETIM, showed how CETIM has developed a simple method for choosing steels and associated heat treatments for cutting and stamping. In particular, on the basis of customer feedback, a toughness and wear index has been set up for the choice of steel/TTh/TS
Patrick JACQUOT of Bodycote spoke more particularly about treatments for cold working tools, which are very much in use in the industrial fabric of the Franc-Comté region.
Renaud SPETTEL from ERAMET Alloys presented the latest high performance grades from powder metallurgy.
The last 2 conferences were about coatings. First Philippe RICKLIN (IonBond IHI group) showed the interest of a new AlTiN CVD coating where the structure of the layer is controlled from the crystallographic point of view and is adjusted in terms of Al/Ti ratio, which strongly improves the wear resistance of the cutting edges.
Finally, Eric THIEFFRY (OERLIKON BALZERS), after recalling the problems of forming new AHSS sheets in the automotive industry, presented a new PVD solution for applications under heavy load.
The afternoon was reserved for a very interesting visit of the Hauck site in Besançon.
