SHAPING AND TREATMENT OF ALLOYS FOR MEDICAL USE
On April 20th, the East-Alsace section organized its spring technical day at the Jean Mermoz high school in SAINT-LOUIS.
Alongside 32 professionals from all regions but also from Germany and Switzerland, the 35 students of 1st and 2nd year of BTS Treatment of materials from Mermoz high school were able to listen to excellent presentations on the theme of the shaping and treatment of alloys for medical use.
Thierry TURPIN, Technical Director of STAINLESS opened the day by presenting the characteristics and uses of the different families of alloys for implants and instruments.
In the second part, the shaping of alloys for medical use was discussed: First of all, drawing and rolling by Jean-Michel BILGER from NOTZ Group, then the forging of orthopaedic implants by Eric LAFFINEUR from MARLE SAS in Nogent.
The 3rd part concerned the treatments themselves. Sylvain BATBEDAT, BODYCOTE France, after having presented the specific heat treatments for alloys for medical use, detailed the functionalization of surfaces.
His German colleague Ulli OBERSTE-LEHN presented the "S3P" process developed by Bodycote for the surface hardening of stainless steels.
Finally, Antonio SANTANA, IONBOND IHI group presented thin film deposition for medical applications.
The series of lectures ended with a presentation by Cécile MARICHAL from the STRAUMANN Institute on high-performance titanium dental implants.
This very rich day by the quality and the variety of the conferences ended by a visit of the laboratories of the BTS Treatments of materials and fruitful exchanges around a glass of the friendship.
