CS07B - Prevention of functional mechanical degradation of aluminum by surface treatments

Inter-company and intra-company courses

New

Educational objectives

  1. To know the main modes of degradation under mechanical stresses that can affect aluminum alloys

  2. To know the standards relating to the quantification of the behavior of aluminum alloys in mechanical stresses

  3. To know the main treatments for improving the mechanical behaviour applicable to Aluminium alloys, including the relative standards, compliance with REACh and ROHS regulations and the complementary characteristics of the treatment for other functional uses

PROGRAM

1. The different modes of mechanical degradation in functional use and the associated quantities

  • Mechanical behavior under static and cyclic loads (fatigue)

  • Surface hardness

  • The mechanical behavior to impact (resilience)

  • Friction, roughness and seizure

  • Contact fatigue (fretting), abrasive and erosive wear

  • Stress corrosion

2. Quantifying mechanical behavior - Normative tests

  • Testing for static and impact failure

  • Measuring hardness

  • Evaluate the fatigue life

  • Measuring roughness and wear resistance

  • Quantify stress corrosion

3. Treatments to protect against wear in non-corrosive environments

  • Mechanical treatments

  • Classic conversions: Hard anodizing

  • Plasma conversions

  • Surface treatments by wet process: Chemical Nickel

  • Vacuum surface treatments (including DLC)

  • Vacuum surface treatments: PVD deposits (including DLC)

4. Treatments to improve friction

  • Classic conversions: Teflon-filled hard anodizing

  • Bonded coatings based on fluoropolymers

  • Other slip coatings (graphite, MoS2)
