Localized treatments, an advantageous solution for surface treatment and heat treatment?
The technical day organized in Liège on "Localized treatments: an advantageous solution for surface treatment and heat treatment?" was attended by 25 people.
The day began with a presentation by the Dalic company on the use of localized electrolysis to restore worn parts or provide additional local functionalities, giving a better understanding of the possibilities offered by this technique. We then turned to the issue of localized heat treatments. An initial presentation by ViPC on behalf of the ISR Group (Modena) recalled the principle and advantages of this treatment, the inductors and types of machine used and their latest developments. Other possible applications of this heating method were also discussed. Framatome presented a focus on localized post-weld stress-relieving of parts that cannot be treated in a furnace, drawing attention to the problem of controlling residual stresses that can be generated during these operations. Bodycote presented the advantages of electron beam welding, particularly in terms of weld depth and residual stress minimization. The afternoon program was devoted to localized physical coating technologies. An initial presentation by Bodycote gave us an insight into the main principles involved in selecting thermal spray materials and processes for different applications. LaserCo used case studies to demonstrate the advantages of laser-cladding technology for repairing or functionalizing parts, particularly in terms of adhesion thanks to the metallurgical bond it guarantees. CRITT MI presented several projects involving PTA (plasma transferred arc) technology, to illustrate the process and product aspects of this technology, in particular as a substitute for hard chromium plating. The day concluded with a visit to the CRM Group's advanced manufacturing platform, where various deposition systems (thermal spraying, electrostatic spraying and laser-cladding) were presented.
