Cooling or quenching media
N.B.: The information contained in this sheet comes from reliable sources. Nevertheless, it is provided without any guarantee, express or implied, of its accuracy.
Principle:
One expects from a middle of temperament:
That it cools under optimum conditions with respect to the metallurgical characteristics of the material to be cooled.
That it protects from the risks of tapping
It minimizes deformations
That it is inert with respect to the surfaces to be cooled.
The quenching medium (including the effects of fluid and quenching facility properties) is characterized by various criteria
The Biot number: h = α / λ
α heat transfer coefficient of the metal to the quenching medium,
λ thermal conductivity of the metal
The quenching severity H defined by Grosmann as H = α / 2λ such that H = 1 in-1 for water.
Undoped, unstirred oils cooling about four times slower than water have a severity H = 0.25 in-1.
Implementation
Main equipment (furnace, reactor, line, machine...)
Energy and fluids (gases, chemicals, quenching liquids, salts...)
