MQ05 - Failure analysis of metallic parts

Inter-company and intra-company courses

New

Educational objectives

  1. Understand the interest of failure analysis, in manufacturing or in service (breakage, corrosion, wear...).

  2. Know how to react to a failure problem.

  3. Recognize the main damage modes.

  4. Knowing how to define the approach to be adopted in order to make the most of the clues that are hidden in the failed spring parts.

  5. Identify the essential causes and define the appropriate actions to be taken.

PROGRAM

1. Day 1

  • Reminder of the main stresses applied to mechanical parts (static, dynamic, surface: mechanical and chemical) in relation to the damage modes.

  • The main steels (and or metallic materials) and their respective hardening modes.

  • Failure analysis approach (failure by rupture and corrosion).

  • The tools and means of analysis.

2. Day 2

  • Identification and definition of the different failure modes (ductile, brittle, fatigue, creep, stress corrosion, hydrogen embrittlement...)

  • Identification and definition of surface deterioration (wear, corrosion ....)

  • The main causes of failure of mechanical parts, related to design, manufacture and use.

  • Illustrations by concrete cases on slideshows

  • Group case study workshop on broken parts.

  • Aspects of the different modes of degradation

  • How to recognize a type of damage?

  • How to locate a bait area?

  • How to define the examinations and analyses to be performed?

  • Definition of corrective actions
