FT01 - Fundamentals of metallurgy applied to heat treatment of metal alloys

Inter-company and intra-company courses

92% satisfaction

Educational objectives

To provide the basis for understanding the mechanisms involved in the heat treatment of metal alloys

PROGRAM

1. Basic knowledge

  • Material properties

  • Structure of matter: atoms, molecules, bonds

  • The states of matter, notions of phases

  • The metallic state, crystal structures, primary and secondary solid solutions, precipitates

  • Relationship between microstructure and material properties, influence of structural defects, elements on structural control methods

  • Phase equilibrium diagrams, description, application to solidification of alloys and solid state transformations

  • Example of equilibrium diagrams, study of the iron-carbon diagram

  • Influence of time on transformations: TTT and TRC diagrams

  • Mechanisms of hardening of metals and alloys: martensitic transformation of steels, hardening by precipitation (example of light alloys, steels, superalloys etc.), hardening by strain hardening

  • Concepts of hardenability of iron-carbon alloys

  • Metal annealing and treatment - recrystallization, globulation, stress relieving, softening, etc.

  • Income

  • Particularity of localized heat treatments and notions of residual stresses in connection with the heat treatment

  • Notions of thermochemical treatments, example of carbon and nitrogen addition (carburizing and nitriding)
