1. Tribology and the origins of friction: Reminders on materials.

  • Friction and its origins: static and dynamic friction, parameters of a friction problem

  • The procedure for studying a friction problem

  • Dry friction, lubricated friction, mechanical modeling, Hertz,

    kinematic length, thermal modeling

2. Wear modes and potential solutions

  • Presentation of wear modes

  • Analysis of used parts

  • How to combat wear and tear patterns

3. Methodology for the conduct of expertise

  • The pitfalls of expertise

  • Case study

  • The available analyses

4. How to define tribological tests

  • The different scales of simulation

  • Friction test or wear test?

  • Notion of kinematic length, which tribometer to choose ?

  • Standard tests list, examples and critical analysis.

  • The construction of a tribometer
