RETURN ON EVENT: Processing and finishing days for additive manufacturing parts
♦ 100 participants ♦ 25 lectures
The 4th edition of the "Treatments et parachèvements de pièces issues de Fabrication additive" days, co-organized by A3TS and the Association Titane, brought together over a hundred participants from industry, suppliers and research, for 25 conferences and a panel of exhibitors.
In the very welcoming and perfectly adapted setting of the Espace Auguste in COLMAR, the participants in these days were able to discuss advances in post-processing of metal parts produced by additive manufacturing, the conferences being divided into two main themes: how to guarantee the integrity of the parts in the mass by heat treatments on the one hand, and how to treat the raw surfaces from the production machines on the other. Indeed, the surface condition measured by roughness indicators is generally very degraded compared to traditional shaping techniques. In this respect, surface finishing is of essential importance, for the appearance of course, for the preparation of functional coatings, and also and above all for the prevention of cracking for parts subjected to fatigue stresses. Numerous finishing technologies have been discussed, mixing mechanical, chemical, electrochemical,...
The participants appreciated the balance between academic and industrial topics. They also drew attention in conclusion to the relatively long development times for additive manufacturing to lead to the industrial use of parts subject to mechanical constraints. Several challenges for researchers were thus raised for the future:
How to estimate the mechanical properties from the surface condition? What is the relationship between surface properties and mechanical properties?
How to characterize the detachable particles? Problem of measuring the detachable particles, when we clean we remove the residual powder and part of the detachable powders with it.
The industry will also have to define more precisely the surface conditions that should be sought on parts produced by FA, the optimum being probably not to always aim for the same conditions as those obtained by conventional technologies. Given the very high cost of finishing operations, it would be appropriate to validate degraded surface states for certain parts or parts of parts, compared to the specifications required in current specifications.
We look forward to a 5th edition of the "Treatment and finishing of additive manufacturing parts" days in 2024!
