BACK TO EVENTS: A3TS 2022 Congress, June 8 and 9, NANTES

On June 8 and 9, more than 200 participants attended the Congress of Heat Treatments and Surface Treatments.

Clients, designers, manufacturers, users and operators looking for efficient technological solutions followed a rich program of 52 conferences, divided into 7 thematic sessions: Thermal and thermochemical treatments, Treatments for conductivity and electrification of vehicles and aircraft, Management and control of quality in treatments, Surface protection, Functionalization of surfaces, Steels, treatments and coatings for tools, Application of digital technologies in heat treatments and surface treatments, Management and control of energy and CO2 emissions for sustainable industrial solutions.

The plenary conferences

Véronique VITRY, President of the A3TS, spoke of the A3TS's pleasure in returning to Nantes, a city at the heart of a rapidly developing industrial ecosystem, driven by the "historic" activities of the aeronautical and naval sectors, and more recently by numerous initiatives in favour of Hydrogen. The many challenges of sustainable development and climate change, discussed in several conference sessions and two round tables, were also highlighted, leading to major changes in the automotive industry and, soon, in the aeronautics industry. The 4.0 challenges, essential to the competitiveness of companies, were also discussed.

Laurent MANACH (General Manager - EMC2 Cluster) presented the EMC2 Cluster, a cluster of European dimension, at the heart of an ecosystem of 800 members, dedicated to manufacturing technologies and with a strategic roadmap: Produce clean, produce better, produce locally, produce connected, produce together to meet the challenges of the industry of the future. The EMC2 cluster, led by industrialists from a wide range of sectors (aeronautics, naval, automotive, energy, etc.), offers industrialists the opportunity to identify opportunities, a window of opportunity to make themselves known and to create networks, and support for the implementation and monitoring of projects.

Vincent GEIGER (NAVAL GROUP Scientific Director), in his lecture "Materials, a major challenge for current and future naval systems", explained the very specific requirements of NAVAL GROUP's activity as a designer, architect, integrator, and present throughout the entire life cycle of ships. Innovation is an essential component of the Group's strategy, aimed in particular at ensuring the ability to last in a harsh environment and superiority in engagement. Materials, for example through the use of new materials or additive manufacturing, are an essential lever of this innovation policy, and digital simulation is omnipresent to simulate the behavior of structures and mechanical components. Vincent Geiger stressed the importance of the collective effort in terms of R1D, the contribution of industrial and academic partners to offer the Marines the most advanced knowledge and technologies.

Loic BUFFET (Project leader - ZEDC - AIRBUS ATLANTIC) explained the role played by the multi-site "Zero Emission Development Centre" and in particular the AIRBUS ATLANTIC teams in NANTES in the context of the AIRBUS group's zero emission strategy. In the 2035 development project for a certified aircraft using hydrogen as fuel, stored in cryogenic liquid form (-253°C), Airbus Atlantic Nantes is focusing on forming, welding, assembly, surface treatment and structural inspection technologies. Designing the tanks and their insulation, distributing the hydrogen until it is injected into the engines at the required pressure and temperature, and ensuring safety and reliability at the level expected by civil aviation are all challenges for which material solutions must be imagined, developed, tested and industrialized.

Bruno POLLET (University of QUEBEC - Trois-Rivieres) reminded us of the characteristics of hydrogen, which make it a fuel and an energy carrier with exceptional properties, thanks in particular to its mass density of energy. The production of "green" or "renewable" hydrogen will require the implementation of considerable production capacities by electrolysis of water. Bruno POLLET described the 5 technologies, mature or under development, of electrolysers, their specificities in terms of materials, the targeted performance objectives, and the barriers to be overcome. Bruno Pollet gave a very complete overview of the technological solutions in use and the challenges in terms of R&D to enable the emergence of a hydrogen energy sector.

THE EVENING AT THE MACHINES OF THE ISLAND

At the end of the Congress, delegates and exhibitors met for the traditional closing evening which, this year, took place at "La Galerie des Machines de l'Ile", an emblematic site of the city of NANTES.

THE A3TS INNOVATION AWARD

The A3TS 2022 Innovation Prize was awarded by Aurélie ACHILLE, President of the jury and of the A3TS Western Section, to BODYCOTE with Tinitron, a process for improving the tribological properties of Titanium.

What is the Tinitron process?
The patented Tinitron process optimizes the tribological performance and wear resistance of Titanium and its alloys. This diffusion treatment ensures an excellent metallurgical bond with its support, allowing to tolerate relatively high contact pressures compared to other existing surface treatments.

Tinitron is particularly well suited to surface treatment of complex parts, in large numbers and at low cost, for various high value-added sectors. In addition, its vacuum processing technique is totally environmentally friendly.

Two other companies had submitted innovation files:

  • Fluke Process Instruments with SV600 Fixed Acoustic Imager

  • Meliad with the Repplix portable learning device
