BACK TO EVENTS: A3TS 2021 Congress - November 24 and 25 - Marseille
Two years after Lille, the heat treatment and surface treatment community met in Marseille on November 24 and 25 for two days of conferences, exhibitions and debates.
As in 2013, but without the sun this time, the Parc CHANOT, hosted this highly anticipated event after more than two years where the virtual world of videoconferences has supplanted real meetings.
Véronique VITRY, President of A3TS, opened the congress by reminding the role that the association plays in the networking of industrial sectors with the world of research, at this time when profound changes are initiated that will transform our societies towards a low-carbon future.
André SOULAGE, President of the SAFE CLUSTER competitiveness cluster, presented the characteristics of this regional ecosystem, which is the third largest cluster in France for the aeronautics and space industries, but which also includes the defense and security sectors. The cluster includes unconventional aeronautical applications such as drones and airships, which pose very specific problems in terms of airspace occupation.
Gildas BUREAU (STELLANTIS) has developed the industrial stakes posed to the automotive industry by the acceleration of the transition to electric traction, desired by the European authorities. The impact on the supply chain of the automotive industry will be considerable. The objective of being able to bring a range of electric vehicles to market very quickly, at a price that is not prohibitive, will require considerable investment and a profound transformation of industrial tools. Manufacturers' strategies will involve building battery "gigafactories" in Europe and developing a high-performance ecosystem of "electric machines". This transformation will lead to an irreversible decline in demand for mechanical components, while at the same time creating new needs in terms of materials, for lighter vehicles, electrical components, ....
Olivier MOLINAS (AIRBUS HELICOPTERS) presented the fundamentals of process qualification processes implemented in the aeronautical field. These qualification processes involve unavoidable steps and incompressible deadlines, which are sometimes little understood by supply chain suppliers. Through the example of the substitution of different technologies for hexavalent chromium, we were able to understand the need for these qualification processes to guarantee the reliability of production lines in the aeronautical industry.
Paco CHINESTA, Professor at ENSAM, fascinated the audience with a very educational conference on the complex subject of "hybrid digital twins". Combining physical models with the exploitation of numerical data by advanced algorithms, Paco CHINESTA showed how this breakthrough methodology could lead to behavioral models whose application in a number of industrial problems is very promising. The great merit of Paco was, starting from the ABCs but without hiding the mathematical complexity behind this approach, to make the audience understand the very specific positioning of this approach between numerical modeling based on physics and 100% numerical models using artificial intelligence, and to imagine cases of application of the "hybrid digital twins" for a number of industrial processes.
50 conferences divided into 9 sessions dealt with innovations in the traditional themes of the Congress - thermochemical treatments, surface protection treatments and functional coatings - but also in more "industrialization" oriented sessions dealing with sensors and digital technologies, energy and carbon impact testifying to rising concerns in the industrial sectors.

THE A3TS EVENING
The traditional evening event brought together congress participants and exhibitors in the recently opened "MX" space on the docks of Marseille.
THE INNOVATION AWARD
The A3TS Innovation Award 2021 was presented by Philippe JACQUET, President of the jury, to AIR PRODUCTS represented by Maximus AKUH.
