RETURN ON EVENT: a3ts Congress and svtm 2019 - JULY 3 AND 4, 2019

225 DELEGATES!

3 PLENARY CONFERENCES
7 SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL CONFERENCE SESSIONS WITH MORE THAN 45 PRESENTATIONS.

The A3TS Congress in Lille once again combined Industry and Research, Process Innovation and Implementation Technologies, Intrinsic Performance of Technologies and Industrial Implementation Constraints. Of the 55 conferences presented, a quarter were presented by research laboratories. The opening session reflected this diversity.

Jean LEYER (Director of the Aulnoye-Aymeries research center) presented the industrial and technological challenges facing the Vallourec group. As a group refocused on tubes for the Oil & Gas sector, Vallourec operates in an environment marked by cyclical fluctuations in oil prices and increasing competition (China). The Group's strategy of moving upmarket towards premium products requires it to step up its R&D efforts. Particular attention is paid to the introduction of digital technologies with applications in product design, production in the factory assisted by on-line models, the provision of data on the product itself to facilitate implementation on the drilling site, etc...

In terms of heat treatment, Jean LEYER recalled that the quenching process of steel tubes was particularly complex and difficult to model; the classical numerical simulation based on physical equations is failing: complexity of phenomena, difficulty to instrument ... The choice was then to develop statistical models "gray" halfway between the physical model and the statistical model. The research teams have to bring together experts with very different skills: materials experts, mathematicians and data scientists. The VALLOUREC group is also studying how additive manufacturing can create value in its production chain, with a focus on WAAM (Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing) and thermal spraying technologies. It is also actively working on developing new functionalities ("Augmented Tubes") such as maximizing the flow capacity of tubes or transporting data or energy in its tubes. Vallourec has opened an Open Innovation platform to forge new partnerships with innovative companies.

Benoit VERQUIN (CETIM) then drew a picture of the development and technological and industrial challenges of additive manufacturing of metal parts. Alongside the production technologies based on the fusion of powder beds (Laser or e-B) which today represent the largest share of industrial production, we are witnessing a proliferation of new technologies that aim to overcome the limits of powder bed technologies: too low productivity, size of the parts produced limited, variability of the raw material (powders) with consequences on the reproducibility of the characteristics of the parts, ...

Among these new technologies, WAAM (Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing), for its ability to produce large parts and a raw material (wire) that is easier to control, and MBJ (Metal Binder Jetting) for its productivity, stand out as the most promising.

Benoit VERQUIN emphasized the key role of post-processing (heat treatment, surface treatment and finishing), which together represent up to 45% of total production costs (source: Airbus), to which must be added 20% for controls. This figure reflects both the demand for innovation to develop productive, high-performance post-processing and inspection technologies, and the need for robust upstream production technologies capable of integrating non-destructive and rapid-response inspection technologies.

Finally, he recalled that the diffusion of additive technologies requires coordination of the standardization work undertaken by the various bodies with a strong commitment from industry.

Jean-Philippe COLOMBIER (Laboratoire Hubert Curien / Université Jean Monnet / St Etienne) then surprised and captivated the audience with a presentation full of promise on the capabilities of a very specific family of lasers to modify surface structures at the nanometer scale to obtain self-organized structures that will determine specific functional properties. Femtosecond lasers concentrate focused energy for a very short time. From the disorder of a surface, rough, chaotic and random, the light induces an order formed by cavities or outgrowths, wrinkles, scales, spikes, according to a geometric periodicity associated with the substrate.

Femtosecond lasers can now be used to treat surfaces up to about one square centimeter, which obviously leads to applications in high value-added fields: micromechanics, watchmaking, space, medical, etc.

The sessions of the congress then covered the traditional themes, with this year an opening towards environmental issues, treatments after additive manufacturing and the contribution of digital technologies.

Gaël Fick (IRT M2P) explained in particular how life cycle assessment (LCA) allows manufacturers to quantify the impacts of the technologies they implement or develop and to identify the main levers to meet the objectives targeted in terms of environmental impact reduction. In the same session, Anne-Sophie Maze (UITS) presented the 3rd edition of the "Water purification" guide for surface treatments.

Finally, the session devoted to the contribution of digital technologies in heat treatments and surface treatments "Industry 4.0" took place in the form of a round table led by Thierry Gautreau (CETIM) with the testimony of representatives of NOF Metal Coatings Europe, Coventya and Weelab Factory. The debates allowed to measure the perspectives offered by the intelligent exploitation of the masses of data which it is possible to bring back from the treatment lines, the diversity of the possible technological approaches and the necessary integration of these data and their treatment in a global industrial approach. According to some testimonies, the development of digital technologies in heat treatment and surface treatment operations is less advanced than in upstream and downstream operations (forming, machining, finishing, etc.) and could therefore constitute a brake on the digitization of the entire production process. Within A3TS, we plan to promote exchanges and reflections between the actors of the sector on this subject and to develop specific initiatives. Members interested in this approach are invited to contact pierre.bruchet@a3ts.org.
